In 2009, a young medical student had the idea to “create a brighter and more rewarding future” for Nigerian children. It wasn’t until 2014 that this idea was brought to life as The Nigerian Child Initiative, after years of capacity building through volunteering and reaching outside to school children to educate them on healthy habits and life values. TNCI has since organised numerous health outreaches to children in their communities and schools and held 3 editions of an annual essay competition on the Sustainable Development Goals. Our first health outreach was held in September 2015 at the Special Correctional Centre for Girls, Idi-Araba and catered to over 200 children.
Our journey towards engaging children on the SDGs via the MyGlobalGoal Campaign started off with interactive talk sessions and group discussions before transitioning to a state-wide Essay Competition in 2016, challenging students to research about the 17 SDGs themselves and brainstorm on practical steps to achieving their favourite goal. Our resulting 17 Global Goal Ambassadors would go on to impact their schools and communities via Social Impact Projects.
